Software Engineer - JavaScript for Data Analysis

You’ll analyze data from uncommon sources, create visualizations, and ultimately design tools to uncover insights on emerging technologies in fields like advanced materials, renewable energy, and robotics. You’ll participate in roadmap planning by capturing issues and breaking down stories into achievable tasks and deploy your solutions in a cloud environment for our customers. We work on making each other better engineers through pair programming, code review, and tech talks – all leading to developing great solutions as a team.

Job description

Lux Research is looking for an experienced software engineer to help evolve our existing data analytics and visualizations (and invent new ones too). Specifically, this effort is focused on analyzing innovation-related datasets to track and predict, with greater accuracy and foresight than ever before, when and how new technologies will impact the market, and which startups and other organizations will lead the way.

You will be responsible for designing and implementing compelling analytics and interactive visualizations as well as a simple, intuitive UX. You will work with the lead software engineer and product manager of this larger effort, as well as collaborating within a larger software development team. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with UX design, JavaScript, webpack, Vue, D3, CSS, and AJAX. Familiarity with Python and/or Ruby on Rails would be beneficial too, but not necessary.

What you’ll do:

  • Create and evolve interactive data visualizations and other outputs of data analytics, using JavaScript and related frameworks.
  • Program and engineer throughout the entire stack of the project, with a focus on data analytics, visualization, and UX.
  • Develop and deploy component libraries to for use within Lux Research.
  • Work with counterparts in other parts of the software development team and more broadly at Lux, including within Lux Research’s core business (like syndicated research and client engagement) to better understand client needs and development opportunities.

What we look for:

  • Several years of experience developing dynamic, browser-based applications using JavaScript and REST APIs.
  • Strong skills within JavaScript, Vue, D3, CSS, webpack.
  • Experience with Ruby on Rails and Python are also highly desirable.
  • An eye for design and precision.
  • Ability to prove a concept, ship minimal viable products quickly and iterate to add new features following an agile methodology.
  • A degree in an IT-related field (computer science, computer engineering, mathematics, statistics, and/or similar), or similar training and experience in the field.

Great communication and organizational skills are essential, including the ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced, collaborative workplace.
